Box Score MEMPHIS-Senior pitcher
Jake Garbuzinski (Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers HS) held No. 2 West Florida to one earned run in nine innings, but a pair of unearned runs in the eighth lifted the visiting Argos to a 3-1 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Friday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.
The Argos (11-2, 6-0 GSC) took an early lead with a bases-loaded two-out single by Tyler Halstead in the top of the second inning, but Garbuzinski drew a groundout to leave the bases loaded.
After the Bucs (4-8, 0-4) failed to capitalize on leadoff doubles by
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) in the second and
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) in the fourth, they knotted the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) sacrifice bunt. Kelly hit a two-out single through the right side to bring Burnett home, but a groundout ended the threat and left the game tied 1-1 after six innings.
The Argos scored the winning runs in the eighth inning. After an Aaron Haag single, a throwing error on a force play at second base allowed him to advance to third. An Austin Southall single scored him, and a one-out groundout scored Southall from third to set the final margin.
The Bucs had two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth, but a strikeout ended the threat and UWF closer Alex Stevens pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save.
Garbuzinski (0-3) took another hard-luck loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits and three walks against five strikeouts, lowering his season ERA to 3.25.
Jordan DeLorenzo earned the win for UWF, holding the Bucs to one run on four hits and three walks against seven strikeouts in eight innings. Stevens struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth.
Kelly went 2-for-3 for the Bucs.
The Bucs and Argos meet again for a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
