Bucs' Comeback Falls Just Short in 4-3 Loss

Bill Higdon threw a scoreless ninth, but the Bucs dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Bethel Tuesday.
Box Score MEMPHIS-After trailing 4-0 after five innings and 4-1 going to the ninth, the Christian Brothers University Bucs scored twice in the ninth inning and put the tying run on third base before falling 4-3 to Bethel Tuesday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.

The Wildcats (13-8) struck first in the fourth with two runs on two walks and two singles, and they doubled their advantage in the fifth with two more on a walk and two singles.

The Bucs (5-18) broke through in the sixth inning after a Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) leadoff double. Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) was hit by a pitch, and Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) laid down a perfect bunt single to load the bases. Cooley was thrown out at home plate on a force play for the first out, but Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) reached on a catcher's interference to score Kelly. A double play ended the threat, and neither team would score again until the ninth.

Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth, and walks to Josh Ambuehl (Las Vegas, Nev./Arlington HS) and Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) loaded the bases with two out. Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) drew a bases-loaded pinch-hit walk to bring the Bucs within a 4-2 score, and a wild pitch scored pinch-runner Trey Keppen (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) and put Cooley on third and pinch-runner Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) on second. But a groundout ended the game with the tying run 90 feet away.

Six different Bucs collected one hit each in the game. Bill Higdon (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) tossed a scoreless ninth, pitching around a pair of two-out singles and an error.

The Bucs hit the road this weekend as they visit No. 30 Valdosta State. Their next home game is Wednesday, March 26, at 3 p.m. against Rhodes.
