Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga.-No. 30 Valdosta State used a one-out eighth-inning homer by Brant Hayman to take a 3-2 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of their three-game series.
Both teams scored twice in the first inning.
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) hit a leadoff double for the Bucs (6-20, 1-14 GSC) in the top of the first. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) sacrifice fly.
Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) hit a two-out double to right-center and scored on a
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) single to left.
The Blazers (17-8, 10-6) answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Matthew Fears hit a one-out double, and Hayman was hit by a pitch. A groundout pushed them to second and third, and Kevin Cruz hit a two-run single up the middle to tie the game.
Neither team would score again until the eighth inning. The Bucs stranded runners on second and third with one out in the third after a
Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) walk and a Cooley double, but a popout and a strikeout ended the threat.
Hayman homered to right-center on a 1-0 pitch in the eighth to give VSU the lead for good. Cooley drew a groundout and a flyout to keep the deficit at one run. Neal hit a leadoff single in the top of the ninth for CBU and moved to second on a Kelly sacrifice bunt. But a flyout and a strikeout left him on second as the game ended.
Neal went 2-for-4 in the game for CBU. Cooley (0-3) held VSU to three runs on six hits and two walks as he threw his second complete game in a row.
The Bucs step out of GSC play twice this week. Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m., they travel to Jackson, Tenn., to face Bethel at Pringles Park. Wednesday they return home for a 3 p.m. game against Rhodes. They host West Alabama for a GSC series next weekend, with Saturday's doubleheader set for noon and Sunday's single game scheduled for 1 p.m.
