Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-Visiting West Alabama swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Sunday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field, winning the opener 9-6 before outlasting the Bucs 3-2 in nine innings in the series finale.
In the second game, most of the scoring came early. UWA (21-9, 10-7 GSC) turned a pair of singles and two fielding errors into a run, but the Bucs (7-24, 1-17) answered in the bottom of the frame.
Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) was hit by a pitch, and singles by
Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) and
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) loaded the bases with one out.
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) grounded into a force play to score Smith, and
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) singled to right-center to score Casey Goodwin.
In the top of the second, the Tigers loaded the bases with three singles, scoring a run on a force play. But for the second time in as many innings, the Bucs threw a runner out at the plate, with Caleb Goodwin cutting down a runner at the plate on a single for the third out.
Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) and Casey Goodwin combined to throw out a runner at the plate in the top of the first as well.
From there, neither team would score again in the scheduled seven innings. Both teams struggled to convert despite plenty of opportunities, with UWA leaving 14 runners on base and the Bucs stranding 10.
The Tigers finally broke the deadlock in the top of the ninth inning. After a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt, the Bucs intentionally walked Jack Cockrum, but Parker Madden drew a walk to load the bases. With the infield drawn in for the play at the plate, Joel Murphy hit a hard grounder to short that
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) dove to knock down but couldn't field cleanly for the play at the plate. Burnett turned a double play to end the inning a batter later, but the Bucs couldn't capitalize on a two-out walk to
Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) in the bottom of the ninth.
Burnett and Caleb Goodwin collected two hits each in the game.
Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) took the loss, allowing one run in four and two-thirds innings as he allowed two hits and four walks, two intentional.
In the opener, the Bucs struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Burnett worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Smith sacrifice bunt, scoring when Kelly hit a single to right.
The Tigers took the lead for good an inning later with two runs on three singles and a double.
They put it out of reach with a six-run sixth inning, taking advantage of three singles, two walks and a three-run Mitch Holgate single, all with two outs.
The Bucs scored a run in the bottom of the sixth as Kelly singled and moved to third on a
Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS) double.
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Kelly.
The Bucs mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning. Smith drew a leadoff walk. Cooley singled, and Kelly was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A walk to Joe and a Hopkins hit by pitch cut the deficit to 8-4. Caleb Goodwin hit a two-out RBI single to bring the Bucs within 8-5, but a flyout ended the threat with the bases loaded.
UWA scored a run in the top of the ninth on a single, a hit batter, a walk and a sacrifice fly. The Bucs set the final margin with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) to score.
