Box Score MEMPHIS-Visiting Edgewood used a four-run fifth inning to seize control as they won 7-2 over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Thursday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.
Each team scored in the first inning, with the Eagles (1-0) using a walk and three singles and the Bucs (4-11) answering on a
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back singles by
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) and
Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) as well as a
Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS) walk had loaded the bases for Kelly.
The game remained knotted at one until the top of the fifth inning, when Edgewood used two singles, an error and a homer to plate four runs. They tacked on another in the sixth on a walk, an error and a single, and a double and a single brought in another run in the eighth to lift them to a 7-1 cushion.
The Bucs threatened in the ninth.
Trey Keppen (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) singled, and walks to Burnett and
Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) loaded the bases with two out. Kelly worked a bases-loaded walk to set the final margin at 7-2, but a flyout ended the threat.
Joe went 2-for-4 for the Bucs in the game, while Kelly drove in two runs.
Jordan Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) tossed a scoreless ninth for CBU.
The Bucs hit the road this weekend for a GSC series at Delta State. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon, with a single game set for 2 p.m. Sunday.
