Bucs Top Magicians 9-3

Justin Neal went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Bucs won 9-3 over LeMoyne-Owen Thursday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs picked up their fourth win in the last five games as they defeated LeMoyne-Owen 9-3 at Nadicksbernd Field Thursday afternoon.

The Bucs (11-25) opened the scoring early. Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) hit a one-out single up the middle in the bottom of the first, and Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) followed by blasting a 2-0 pitch over the fence in left-center for his first home run of the season.

The Magicians (7-25) evened the score in the top of the second when a walk and a single set the stage for a two-run double by Rumeal Robinson.

The Bucs regained the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning. Cale Alexander (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) drew a leadoff walk, and Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) and Cooley were hit by pitches to load the bases with one out. Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) hit an infield single to score Alexander and put the Bucs back on top. Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) drew a bases-loaded walk, and Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) hit an RBI single to left to extend the Bucs' lead to 5-2.

The Bucs tacked on three more in the sixth inning. Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) and Alexander reached on a pair of errors, and Burnett singled Goodwin home. After Smith was hit by a pitch, Neal hit a two-run single through the right side to extend CBU's lead to 8-2.

The Magicians used a single, a wild pitch and a double to score a run in the top of the eighth.

The Bucs added a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) drew a leadoff walk and moved around to third on a passed ball and a groundout. Pinch-hitter Bill Higdon (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) hit an RBI single up the middle to score him.

Michael Spain (Huron, Tenn./Lexington HS) earned the win, improving to 5-2 as he allowed one run on four hits in five innings of relief. Neal went 3-for-4 with three RBI's for the Bucs. Cooley scored three runs with two RBI, and Burnett and Alexander scored twice each. Peyton Sanderlin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) threw a scoreless ninth.

The Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they visit Alabama-Huntsville for a GSC doubleheader. Their next home game is set for Friday, April 18, at noon as they host a doubleheader against West Georgia.
