Chargers Top Bucs 5-4, 6-0

Josh Hopkins went 4-for-7 with a homer and two runs scored, but host Alabama-Huntsville swept a doubleheader from the Bucs Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE, Ala.-Host Alabama-Huntsville swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday, holding off a late CBU rally for a 5-4 win in game one and winning 6-0 in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Bucs (11-27, 3-20 GSC) struck first and last, but UAH (28-13, 16-7) won the game in the middle innings.

Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) singled to left for the Bucs in the top of the second, moving to second on a Josh Ambuehl (Las Vegas, Nev./Arlington HS) sacrifice bunt and third on a Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) single. A balk scored Hopkins to put the Bucs on the board.

The Chargers scored three in the third, on two doubles, two singles and a hit batter, to take the lead for good.

Hopkins pulled the Bucs within a run in the top of the sixth when he launched a solo homer to left, but the Chargers restored their two-run edge in the bottom of the sixth with a walk, a single and a successful squeeze bunt.

A two-out run in the eighth gave UAH a 5-2 lead as they capitalized on a walk, a steal and a single.

The Bucs would rally in the top of the ninth. Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) singled through the right side with one out, and he moved to third on a throwing error when Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) hit into a force play. Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) hit a two-run double to the gap in left-center, putting the tying run in scoring position with one out, but a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat and the game.

Hopkins went 3-for-4 with two runs in the game, and Cooley was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Smith and Ambuehl also collected two hits each.

In game two, the Chargers scored all the runs they would need in the first inning, with two runs on a walk, a balk and two singles.

They added two more in the third on a single and two doubles, completing the scoring with one run each in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Bucs collected four hits in the game. Cooley tossed a scoreless inning of relief, pitching around a single.

CBU and UAH meet again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Their next home game is Friday at noon as they host West Georgia for a doubleheader.
