Chargers Outslug Bucs 7-3

Stephen Joe went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, but the Bucs lost 7-3 at Alabama-Huntsville Sunday.
Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala.-A pair of home runs proved to be the difference as host Alabama-Huntsville won 7-3 over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Sunday afternoon.

The Bucs (11-28, 3-21 GSC) opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) doubled to left-center and moved to third when Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS) singled to left-center. Josh Ambuehl (Las Vegas, Nev./Arlington HS) scored Hopkins with a sacrifice fly to put the Bucs on the board.

The Chargers (29-13, 17-7) took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring twice on two singles and a double.

The biggest blow of the game came an inning later. The Chargers loaded the bases with one out on a single and two walks, and UAH left fielder Brandon Lawing blasted a grand slam to left, giving the Chargers a 6-1 lead.

The Bucs shaved a run off the deficit in the sixth as Hopkins reached on a two-out single and scored on a Joe double to the gap in left-center.

CBU pulled back within three runs in the seventh, when Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) doubled to left with two out and scored when Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) singled to center.

Another UAH homer set the final margin in the bottom of the seventh, as Chase Handley homered to left-center to give UAH a 7-3 lead.

Cooley went 3-for-4 in the game, while Hopkins, Joe and Smith collected two hits each, with Hopkins scoring twice. Bill Higdon (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) tossed an inning and a third of scoreless relief for the Bucs.

The Bucs return to action Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they visit LeMoyne-Owen. They play a noon doubleheader Friday afternoon against West Georgia at Nadicksbernd Field before celebrating Senior Day with a 1 p.m. start Saturday afternoon.
