Big Innings Burn Bucs

Riley Kilgore hit an RBI single, but the Bucs were swept 11-1 and 2-0 Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs only allowed visiting West Georgia to score in four of 16 innings in Friday's doubleheader, but the Wolves scored two or more runs in each of the four as they claimed an 11-1, 2-0 sweep over the Bucs at Nadicksbernd Field.

In the opener, both teams' pitchers dominated early, with five scoreless innings flying by in less than an hour. The Wolves' (17-24, 11-14 GSC) bats came alive in the top of the sixth, plating three runs on three singles and a triple. They tacked on four more in the seventh on four singles, a sacrifice fly and an error.

The Bucs (11-29, 3-22) scored in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) singled and moved to second when Josh Ambuehl (Las Vegas, Nev./Arlington HS) worked a one-out walk. After Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) grounded into a force play, moving Ambuehl to third, Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) hit an RBI single to right to bring in Ambuehl. Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) was hit by the next pitch to load the bases, but a flyout ended the threat.

The Wolves scored four in the ninth, on two walks, a hit batter, a single, a double and a triple, to set the final margin.

Hopkins went 2-for-4 in the gmae for CBU.

The Wolves scored both of their game-two runs in the top of the fourth inning, when Troy Brown hit a two-run double after a pair of walks.

The Bucs threatened throughout the game, leaving runners on base in six of the game's seven innings, including two runners on twice and the bases loaded in the fifth, but they were unable to score against UWG hurlers Colton Duttweiler and Chris Burdette, who combined for a five-hit shutout.

The Bucs and Wolves meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. for CBU's final home game of the season. CBU will celebrate Senior Day before the game as they will honor their eight seniors.
