Box Score CLEVELAND, Tenn.-For the third time in as many games, host Lee University scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and went on to defeat the Christian Brothers University Bucs by one run. Sunday afternoon, that first-inning tally was the game's lone run, as they knocked off the Bucs 1-0 in the regular-season finale for both schools.
The Flames (30-17, 15-12 GSC) used a pair of doubles by Andres Nelo and Zac Hawkins to plate what proved to be the game's only run with two out in the bottom of the first inning.
The Bucs (11-35, 3-27) threatened to score several times. In the top of the fourth,
Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) reached on a fielder's choice after
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out, but the Bucs were unable to score him. An inning later,
Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) was hit by a pitch and
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) singled with two out, but a strikeout ended the threat.
The Bucs' best chance came in the top of the seventh.
Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) reached on an error, and
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) singled. After a
Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) sacrifice bunt put them on second and third with one out, Kilgore drew a walk to load the bases, but the Bucs grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Bucs had one more scoring chance in the eighth inning.
Trey Keppen (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) struck out but reached on a wild pitch on the third strike to start the inning, and he moved to second on an error. Smith worked a walk, but a flyout and a groundout ended the threat, and the Bucs went down in order in the ninth.
The Flames held CBU to four hits in the game, spoiling a strong effort from hurlers
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) and
Michael Lartigue (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS). Cooley scattered eight hits and three walks over six innings, striking out six as he allowed one run. Lartigue tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts against a hit and a walk.
