Box Score MEMPHIS-Visiting Union scored in five separate innings as they claimed a 12-3 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Sunday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.
The Bulldogs (12-23, 5-14 GSC) scored two runs in each of the first three innings to take an early lead. They used three singles and a hit batter to score twice in the first, and they used three singles, a walk and a passed ball to score two in the second. They tacked on two more in the third on a double and a pair of singles to extend their lead to 6-0.
The Bucs (10-25, 3-18) broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out rally. After
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) drew a two-out walk,
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) reached on an error.
Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) singled to right field to score Goodwin and cut the deficit to 6-1.
The Bulldogs put it out of reach with three more runs in the top of the seventh inning on three singles, a double and a walk. They tacked on three runs in the top of the ninth inning on three singles, a walk and an error.
The Bucs set the final margin in the bottom of the ninth when they scored two runs.
Josh Ambuehl (Las Vegas, Nev./Arlington HS) was hit by a pitch to start the rally. After stealing second, he scored on an error on a
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) single, with Burnett reaching third on the error. Smith scored Burnett when he reached on an error. A pair of walks loaded the bases with two out, but a groundout ended the game.
Bill Higdon (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) pitched an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief, with three strikeouts against a hit and a walk. Smith went 1-for-5 with two RBI.
Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) and
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) drew three walks each for the Bucs.
The Bucs return to action Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m as they host LeMoyne-Owen for a non-conference game. They visit Alabama-Huntsville next weekend for a GSC series, with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a 1 p.m. game Sunday afternoon.
