No. 4 Statesmen Overpower Bucs 15-2

Tyler Burnett went 3-for-4 with an RBI, but the Bucs lost 15-2 to Delta State Friday night.
Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-No. 4 Delta State scored in each of the first five innings as they won 15-2 over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Friday night in the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

The Statesmen (36-9) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with two runs on two walks, a single and a double.

DSU tacked on a run in the second on an error and a single, but the Bucs (11-36) shaved a run off the lead in the top of the third. Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) led off with a single to center, moving to second on a Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) sacrifice bunt. Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) followed with a single up the middle to score him. A Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) single and a Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) walk loaded the bases, but a strikeout and a flyout ended the threat.

DSU tacked on two of their own in the third, on two hit batters, two walks and a single. They blew it open with six runs in the fourth on three walks, a hit batter, a single, a double and a sacrifice fly, extending their lead to 11-1. They scored four more in the fifth on four singles, a walk and an error.

The Bucs scored a run in the top of the sixth, when Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) tripled to right-center and scored when Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS) reached on an error. Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) and Casey Goodwin were hit by pitches to load the bases, but the Bucs left the bases loaded again.

Burnett went 3-for-4 with an RBI for CBU. Drew Tatum (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) threw a scoreless inning of relief.

The Bucs return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. as they take on West Alabama.
