Jake Garbuzinski (Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers HS) tossed the first shutout of his career Saturday night to lift the Christian Brothers University Bucs to a 1-0 win over West Alabama in an elimination game in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. The win was CBU's first-ever GSC Tournament victory.
The Bucs (12-36) gave Garbuzinski all the run support he would need in the bottom of the first inning.
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) worked a leadoff walk, and
Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) and
Justin Neal (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) each hit infield singles to load the bases with one out.
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) followed with a single to right to put CBU on top, but a pair of popouts stranded the bases loaded.
From there, Garbuzinski dazzled, scattering nine hits and a walk as he went the distance on 108 pitches. Garbuzinski struck out five for the game.
The Tigers (27-18) made their biggest challenge in the top of the eighth inning. Leadoff hitter Mitch Holgate was hit by a pitch, and UWA sacrificed him to second. After an infield single and a walk, the bases were loaded with one out. But Garbuzinski drew a sharp grounder to second base for a double play, ending the threat, and he pitched around a one-out single to preserve the shutout in the ninth.
Neal, Hopkins and
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) collected two hits each for the Bucs.
The complete game is Garbuzinski's third of the season and the third of his career. The shutout was the first for a CBU pitcher this season and the third overall for the team.
The Bucs advance to a Sunday morning elimination game against second-seeded Alabama-Huntsville. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. at Young Memorial Field on the campus of UAB.
