CBU athletics continues to honor its senior student-athletes from all spring sports who had their seasons/careers cut short due to cancellation of competition across all sports in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Peter Torres was a four-year member of the cross country/ track and field teams, and was a CBU Gold Scholar. Torres, who graduated with a 3.77 GPA in business administration, was a two-time All-Region and All-Conference performer in cross-country, and a fall Gulf South Conference All-Academic Team member. He finished 21st at the 2019 NCAA Cross Country South Region Championships and 12th in the mile at the 2020 GSC Indoor Championships.
What is your major?
Business Administration; Concentration in Sport Management
What are your future plans/career goals?
I'll be attending graduate school this fall to get my MBA.
What were your thoughts when you found out the season was being canceled?
Mostly disbelief and disappointment. I had worked extremely hard over the winter when training for this track season, so it is disappointing that I will not get the chance to compete. After winning my season opener, I knew I was ready to run some great times.
What led you to CBU?
Coach
Bill Hoffman did a really good job selling the school for me. After my visit, I really liked the small school environment. I was able to bond well with the team, and I knew that the class sizes would help me succeed academically. In the end, it was the scholarship money that sealed the deal!
What has been your favorite thing about your time here?
Being a part of the Cross Country team. Running has always been my passion, but being a part of this team has been the best experience for me. I was able to form lifelong friendships with all of my teammates, and I am incredibly thankful for all of them.
What is one of your best memories from your career?
Finishing First-Team All-Conference in Cross Country in 2017. Our team then went on to finish 6
th in the conference and 9th in the region after being ranked last in all pre-season polls. It was awesome to see the team put in so much work and have it all pay off. Definitely turned some heads that season! Next best memory would be the Fall Sports Classic (if you know, you know).
What is one of the most funny/embarrassing moments from your career?
Probably the funniest moment that comes to mind is watching my teammate
Jacob Axton being chased by dozens of seagulls while trying to eat an ice cream cone. I got the video if anyone wants to have a good laugh.
Who is someone who has had a major impact on you – be it in your athletic career or personally?
Coach Hoffman has had a huge impact both athletically and personally. He's always had my back, especially with academics and work. You can tell that he values his athletes as people and as friends. He isn't afraid to tell you the truth, even when it hurts!
What is your favorite activity or best talent outside of your sport?
Skateboarding is my favorite activity, though it is far from a talent. I also enjoy making fun of my teammate
Jacob Axton. I'd say I'm fairly talented at that.
If you had to be quarantined with four celebrities, who would they be?
Evan Jager, Mathew Centrowitz, and Eliud Kipchoge. I'll give you $5 if you could tell me who these people are without googling them first!
If you were going to be isolated in your house for a month, what are the first three items you'd make sure to grab at the store?
Toilet paper, frozen pizzas, and some Gotta Get up to Get Down
One musical artist you'd recommend to everybody?
Blink 182, it's what I grew up listening to.
What's a show you're currently watching, or have recently?
Dexter and Tiger King.
You have the power to make one law – what would it be?
Wearing Cargo Shorts should be capital offense.
If you could give your 10 year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Focus more on school. Your education is more important than you think it is, and the sooner you get into good habits the better off you'll be down the road. Also, lay off the lucky charms.
