MEMPHIS—Junior midfielder
Andrew Ballard (Memphis, Tenn., Briarcrest Christian HS) scored on a diving header with five minutes to play, lifting the Christian Brothers University Bucs to a 1-0 win over Delta State Sunday afternoon at Signaigo Field.
The Bucs (7-8-1) dominated the flow of the game, peppering the Delta State (4-12) net with 25 shots over the first 84 minutes. With five minutes remaining, freshman midfielder
Daniel Jenkins (Somerset, England/Millfield School) served a corner kick into the box, and Ballard dived between two Statesman defenders to head in the game's only goal.
The Bucs out-shot Delta State 27-8 for the game, but they struggled to put shots on target, with each team taking an identical seven shots on goal.
Daniel Johnson (Lafayette, La./Lafayette HS) made seven saves for the Bucs to earn his fifth career clean sheet.
The Bucs will close the regular season Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Harding in a game that will determine who goes to the GSC Tournament.
If the Bucs win, they will go into the GSC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. With a tie, the Bucs would be the No. 3 see. If Harding wins and allows CBU to score less than two goals, Harding would earn the No. 4 seed and the Bucs would stay home, while the Bucs would advance as the No. 3 seed if they score twice in a loss. West Florida has clinched the top seed, and Ouachita Baptist and Alabama-Huntsville have already clinched berths.
