MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs used a 23rd-minute goal from freshman forward
Lauren Quinones (Melbourne, Fla., West Shore HS) to win 1-0 over Rhodes in the first game at Signaigo Field in 22 months.
For much of the first 20 minutes, the Lady Bucs (2-2) were stuck in their defensive end, but their counterattack proved deadly in the 23rd minute as freshman
Lauren Browning (Memphis, Tenn./St. Agnes Academy) passed a long ball ahead to Quinones, who beat Rhodes (2-3) keeper Stephanie Sermonet and found the net for the game's only goal.
The Lady Bucs kept the pressure on, with several more good chances, but Sermonet made seven saves to keep the Lynx within striking distance.
Libby Hake (Fort Wayne, Ind./Canterbury HS) made four saves to earn her second shutout of the season.
The Lady Bucs out-shot Rhodes 14-11 for the match, including an 8-4 lead in shots on goal.
Signaigo Field had been closed since November of 2008 as the city of Memphis installed a flood control system under the field. New irrigation systems and a new scoreboard were also installed, and the light towers were renovated as the field level was lowered by several feet. Signaigo field was re-dedicated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony before kickoff.
The Lady Bucs hit the road this weekend as they visit Belhaven Saturday night at 6 p.m. Their next home game is set for Tuesday night at 5 p.m. against Montevallo.
