CLEVELAND, Miss.—The Christian Brothers University Bucs out-shot host Delta State 21-10, but a 15th-minute penalty kick lifted the Statesmen to a 1-0 win in the Bucs' first Gulf South Conference game of the year.
The Statesmen (3-7, 1-2 GSC) scored the only goal in the 15th minute as Matthew Baker scored on a penalty after the Bucs (2-7-1, 0-1) were called for a handball in the box.
From there, the Bucs controlled the action, out-shooting DSU 21-10, holding a 9-3 edge in shots on goal for the game, and earning 13 corners to the Statesmen's two, but they were unable to solve DSU keeper Flavio Romero, who made nine saves to earn the clean sheet.
The Bucs will try to snap out of their skid Sunday as they host Ouachita Baptist in a non-conference game at 4:30 p.m.
