Box Score MEMPHIS—The No. 20 Christian Brothers University Bucs completed their first perfect Gulf South Conference regular season and earned their first GSC regular season crown Saturday afternoon when they defeated Delta State 2-0 on Senior Day.
The two seniors shined on their day.
Alex Bermel (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) helped put the Bucs (14-3, 5-0 GSC) on the board just over 10 minutes into the game. After he chased down a throughball into the corner, he beat the defense to the ball, dribbled towards the keeper, and fed a quick cross to
Jose Ferraz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/) for the goal. In the 32nd minute, Bermel headed a free kick from
Yannick Skull (Adelaide, Australia/Woodcroft College) to Ferraz, who fired another score past DSU (5-12, 0-5) goalkeeper Flavio Romero for his 14th goal of the season.
Bermel's two-assist game was the Bucs' first since
Adamandios Toras (Meitarie, La./Archbishop Rummel HS) had two assists against Rhodes in 2009. He nearly added a spectacular goal in the 84th minute.
Michael Hollier (Lafayette, La./Teurlings HS) made a run towards the corner and served a perfect cross to Bermel, whose header was punched away by Romero. Bermel headed it back towards goal but missed wide left of the net, leaving the score 2-0.
The Bucs' other senior,
Daniel Johnson (Lafayette, La./Lafayette HS), made one save as he earned his sixth career shutout. The Bucs out-shot DSU 24-5 for the game, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal.
Johnson and Bermel were honored before the game in Senior Day ceremonies.
The Bucs return to action in the GSC Tournament next Friday in Pensacola, Fla., where they will face No. 4 seed Harding for the third time this season.
