Six Bucs earn all-conference honors from the GSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Christian Brothers University men's soccer team placed six of its players on the 2024 All-Gulf South Conference awards list which was released on Thursday afternoon. Vicent Sanchis Olmedo (Valencia, Spain) headlined by becoming the first CBU player to be named Defensive Player of the Year and only the second goalkeeper to earn that honor from the GSC.

Vicent Sanchis Olmedo, Gr., GK, Co-Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-GSC
  • Three-time GSC Goalkeeper of the Week. 
  • Led the conference in goals against average (.456), save percentage (.865) and shutouts per game (.417).
  • Ranked third in the nation in save percentage and fourth in goals against average .
  • Never allowed more than one goal in 12 games played and 11 starts.
  • Recorded all six of his clean sheets against conference opponents.
Russell Brown, So., F, First Team All-GSC
  • Two-time GSC Player of the Week. 
  • Ranked third in the GSC in both goals scored (10) and game-winning goals (3). 
  • His 22 points (10G/2A) ranked second in the league. 
  • Scored two hat tricks in matches at West Alabama and AUM. 
  • Made his impact as a substitute coming off the bench, playing in 15 games with three starts. 
  • His clinical finishing boosted CBU to the team with the most goals scored in the GSC (39) by the end of the season.
Alexander Blanche, Jr., F, Second Team All-GSC
  • Named GSC Player of the Week once.
  • Constant attacking threat from his winger position.
  • Scored six goals, including two game winners, and assisted on two more this season. 
  • His 48 shots and 19 shots on goals both ranked fourth in the GSC. 
  • Played a major role in CBU recording the third-highest scoring average (2.438 gpg) and most shots taken (234) in the league. 
George Chandler, Sr., D, Second Team All-GSC
  • Named GSC Defensive Player of the Week once.
  • Logged 1158 minutes, third-most for the Bucs, with 15 games played and 13 starts at his fullback position. 
  • Registered three assists and scored one goal while pressing up the pitch. 
  • Made an impact as a set-piece specialist for CBU.
  • Helped his team record seven shutouts and hold opponents to one goal or less in 13 matches. 
  • Key part of the backline with a team goals against average of 0.875 which led the GSC and ranked 21st in the nation.
Olaf Kramer, Sr., M, Second Team All-GSC
  • Scored two goals, including one game winner, in 14 games played and 12 starts for the Bucs this season. 
  • Spent the third-most time, 833 minutes, on the pitch among CBU's midfielders.
  • Key part of the midfield that was situated between the offense that scored the most goals (39) and the defense that allowed the least goals (14) in the GSC this season. CBU's goal differential ranked 15th in the nation.
Harry Laing, Gr., M, Second Team All-GSC
  • Played a pivotal role in CBU winning the midfield battle this season. 
  • Scored four goals, including one game winner, and assisted on three more. 
  • Took over penalty kicking responsibilities during the season, going 2-for-2 from the spot. 
  • His two penalty kick goals were taken in 1-1 draws against Delta State and West Florida. 
  • His 1,032 minutes played was the third-highest total for the Bucs.
The CBU men's soccer team will host Delta State in the quarterfinals of the GSC Championship Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. under the lights of Signaigo Field. The Bucs are currently receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches National Poll and ranked fifth in the South Region by the same organization.
